Liner notes from Was It Like This:

I first met Steve Erwin down in Solomon's Island, Maryland in the early '80's through my brother Michael. I can't remember the occasion, but it was some sort of party at a place called the Dry Dock. At some point Steve and I and a few others began playing some of his tunes. I suppose we played less than an hour but I never got over it, so to speak. I didn't talk with Steve again until 1986 when he called me about performing his music. The next 2 years found us doing just that, mostly at Gallagher's Pub on Connecticut Ave. During this time I was also working with Danny Gatton in our jazz group, Funhouse II. I had mentioned Steve to Danny several times and they finally met at one of Danny's gigs (at the other Gallagher's on Capitol Hill) I believe. When Danny heard Steve's tunes, he fell for them like I did.
By the fall of '88 we were recording at Big Mo Studio and that's what you have here. I am grateful to have taken part in one of my favorite albums (!) with 2 of my favorite musicians! Besides the tunes being world class, I believe this some of the best playing Danny has done. Harold Howland, the drummer, is a real artist and interpreted beautifully. Steve has the ability to draw you into his story and make it familiar to you. This is what an artist does.
At the time of this recording I had played with Danny over 12 years. It was profoundly moving to hear how Steve's tunes drew new and different things out in Danny's playing. Danny shared with me in the joy of working with Steve.
One of the next projects near the end of Danny's life was to be a new album of Steve's tunes. This never happened, sorry to say. The world has needed to hear this for a long time. Thank God it is being released for all to enjoy.

Sweet Boy 04:24
Look at your sweet boy The one with the good intentions. Walk a mile with him And slide down that face full of love. Look at your sweet boy The one with the good intentions. Walk a mile with him And slide down that face full of love. Sweet boy, he's always there to listen, Sweet boy, he's just what you've been missing. He says - I love your body, I love your mind Could anyone else ever be this kind. He says - I love your body, I love your mind Who else could be this kind? Odds on your sweet boy He's a rock of Gibraltar. Lean hard on him He just wants to pull you through. Sweet boy, he knows when you've been sleeping. Sweet boy, he knows when you're awake. Hold tight to your sweet boy, Ah, he's real close to manhood. Try to understand that boys like him Don't grow on trees. Sweet boy, he'll never deceive you, Sweet boy, he'll never ever leave you. He says - I love your body, I love your mind Could anyone else ever be this kind. He says - I love your body, I love your mind Who else could be this kind? Sweet boys, they're alway there to listen, Sweet boys, they're just what you've been missing, Sweet boys, they know when you've been sleeping, Sweet boys, they know when you're awake, Sweet boys, they'll never deceive you, Sweet boys, they'll never ever leave you......

Oh Howard 03:51
Oh Howard, oh Howard, Where are you tonight? You made me in your image, Another hopeless, burning bright. A drunkard is enlightened until he sees the light And oh Howard, oh Howard I'm a mad dog tonight. Oh Howard, oh Howard, What have I become? You taught me how to talk, Just to leave me deaf and dumb. You told me what to feel, Just to leave me next to numb. And oh Howard, oh Howard, I'm buying a gun. A curious love, these beautiful lights. Waltzing through bottles, to that devil's delight. Oh Howard, oh Howard, oh Howard can't you see, You can't commit a murder And get away scot free. If justice must have it's end Then that's the way that it shall be. And oh, Howard, oh Howard You can place your faith in me. A curious love, these beautiful lights. Waltzing through bottles, to that devil's delight. Oh Howard, me and Howard, at the OK Corral, You brought a fifth of whiskey Howard- you're a pal. You know I hate to do this At least I did until now And just like a ton of bricks Oh Howard, oh wow...... Oh Howard, oh Howard, Where are you tonight? You made me in your image, Another hopeless, burning bright. A drunkard is enlightened until he sees the light And oh Howard, oh Howard I'm a mad dog tonight.

In Fall 06:48
In Fall, only in Fall When all of memory is recalled. You're sad, and you never know why. Each and every breeze can send up a sigh. And in a moment, it seems like It never has been. In the daylight, you feel like, That same old friend. Do you remember when It was like this, my friend? No, never again. Old loves write kind reviews, Of all that you didn't do. And they say, come home. All that's broken can mend. But then they fade like the tree line's end. And in a moment, it seems like It never has been. In the daylight, you feel like, That same old friend. Do you remember when It was like this, my friend? No, never again. Some day, when we're old and gray. We'll laugh about these days. And we will think how the years have flown, And we will love this sad old song. Or will we wake up to find out It never has been. In the daylight, in the moonlight, We're strangers, again. Will we remember when Was it like this, my friend? No, never again.

I'm walkin' this road. It's a lonesome road. I'm walkin' this road. It's a righteous road. And this road is sober And this road is straight, But my mood is ugly as I walk this road. I'm walkin' this road as I walk this road. I cried- Sleep, awake me but my dreams were the same. I cried for love to take me, I cried for someone to blame. I cried for peace and quiet, for a passage of time. Or else re-incarnate me - give me someone else's mind. I'm walkin' this road. It's a lonesome road. I'm walkin' this road. It's a righteous road. And this road is sober And this road is straight, But my mood is ugly as I walk this road. I'm walkin' this road as I walk this road. Well, I know I need religion like a hole in the head. With no drugs and no religion Am I better off dead? I see boys and girls with secrets I see boys and girls in pairs. Must be a turn I should have taken. I got screwed up somewhere. I'm walkin' this road. It's a lonesome road. I'm walkin' this road. It's a righteous road. And this road is sober And this road is straight, But my mood is ugly as I walk this road. I'm walkin' this road as I walk this road. Thanks for the coffee and thanks for the time. You didn't make me happy but thanks for tryin'. Life well may be sacred but it's a heavy load. And this never knowing makes a weary road. I'm walkin' this road. It's a lonesome road. I'm walkin' this road. It's a righteous road. And this road is sober And this road is straight, But my mood is ugly as I walk this road. I'm walkin' this road as I walk this road.

If you'll pardon my wishing. So close to Christmas time. I know you keep such busy hours But can you answer mine. I haven't been good but I haven't been mean, And people have been kind to me. And I have these stars, that I embrace, Wrapped around this Christmas tree. But there is a melancholy, like a ship on a weary sea, And the girl I adore, on that distant shore Leaves a hole where my heart should be. Oh, I have enough adventure, That's not what I dream of. All that I want for Christmas is- an uncomplicated love. Yes, it seems that there are these complications, No matter what we do. When love tries to walk, when love tries to talk, When love tries to think things through. And sometimes love stops at nothing And goes by some other name. If you're in the way then you'll get hurt. It's just the rules of the game. Oh, I have enough adventure, That's not what I dream of. All that I want for Christmas is- an uncomplicated love. Somewhere there was a boy and there was a girl. Somehow they must have fallen in love. They lived together and then they died. And that's all there was...... Oh, I have enough adventure, That's not what I dream of. All that I want for Christmas is- an uncomplicated love. Am I asking for the moon....... Am I asking so much...... All that I want for Christmas is - an uncomplicated love.

I'm sleeping on the last seat Of the last train going backwards. And watch as it railroads my life. Dreaming about buried talent. Oh me.... oh my..... I'm sleeping on the last seat Of the last train going backwards. And watch as it railroads my life. Dreaming about buried talent. Oh me.... oh my..... Lazy is as lazy do So please make up my mind. Am I saving my best for eternal rest? Asleep, before my time. Or is it just a question Of who works and who likes to dream. Who've found their mission in horizontal position. The perfect American dream. I'm sleeping on the last seat Of the last train going backwards. And watch as it railroads my life. Dreaming about buried talent. Oh me.... oh my..... Born dirt poor and southern, This year I'm of Irish descent. Spent half of my life with Indian blood But no one believed my pigment. Life's so hard when you're born a tourist "Cause no one speaks English these days. I came into this Earth in a Hawaiian shirt, And I'll probably leave that way. I'm sleeping on the last seat Of the last train going backwards. And watch as it railroads my life. Dreaming about buried talent. Oh me.... oh my.....
